Ian Darrington reviews Rachel Brand's Wigan Jazz Club gig

Ian Darrington, MBE, is Director of Jazz Performance on Wigan Council and the European Representative on the Board of IAJE. In his capacity as Wigan Jazz Club promoter, this is what he had to say about my gig with Mike Walker and the Whackabas Trio at Wigan Jazz Club last month.

"Rachel was a major hit at the Wigan Jazz Club. It was obvious that a lot of thought had gone into the selection, preparation and arrangement of the songs. As a result each song was beautifully delivered with an originality that is rare in jazz today. A top quality performance by a very special vocalist."

For photos and a brief write up of the gig, see http://www.wiganjazzclub.co.uk/070527.htm

Thanks to Ian for inviting us to perform at such a great venue. Let's hope we'll be back there again before long.

Lazing by the pool, a French chef, jazz and me...

Come on, now is that a package? You know you want to check out the Med Jazz Summer School. It's one hot August option. This year, I'm teaching on week one, starting August 11th, alongside saxophonist Stan Sulzmann, bassist Geoff Gascoyne and pianist Kate Williams - oh yes. Not only that, but we're going to be in France. Did I mention that? In a chateau... with wine... What's more, I'm helping out Liane Carroll and Sophie Bancroft with the Singers' Course in week 3. Hooray. Let's not beat around the bush, that's three big women to contend with...

I had better give you the link as I know you are now all drooling to find out more and come along http://www.jazzsummerschool.com/

Apparently week one is still fairly low on singers so if you want a bit of personal care and attention and a band of your own to sing with, that would be the week to plump for. It's a great vibe and you get to sing every day, with other musicians. And lie by the pool. And eat great food. And drink wine. That's every day. Come on now, have you got something better lined up.
